IEEE C37.59-2002 pdf download.IEEE Standard for Requirements for Conversion of Power Switchgear Equipment
1.2 Scope
This standard covers power switchgear equipment that is converted from a qualifed design. It provides direction and guidance in those conversions and specifes required design verifcation in accordance with applicable American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), UL, or IEEE standards. This standard also recognizes that production/feld testing does not provide design verifcation. It can only be accomplished by means of design testing and technical evaluation.
1.3 Other conversions
The conversion and testing processes outlined in this standard are based on known examples, and the examples are outlined for general guidance and direction. However, alterations can be made to other equipment, not discussed in detail in this document, which require design verifcation in accordance with appropriate standards. When any question develops, the converter should be consulted. Although this standard specifcally does not cover reconditioning of power switchgear equipment, it does recognize the process and the fact that appropriate production/feld testing is necessary.
1.4 Word usage
In this document, the word shall is used to indicate a mandatory requirement. The word should is used to indicate a recommendation. The word may is used to indicate a permissible action. The word can is used for statements of possibility and capability.
2. Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document (i.e., they shall be understood and used, so each referenced document is cited in text and its relationship to this document is explained). For dated references, only the edition cited applies.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments or corrigenda) applies except as follows:
a) When conversions are made to older equipment, such as circuit breakers rated on a total current basis, it is essential that the converted device electrical ratings are correlated to at least meet the applicable electrical ratings described in the edition of the standard that was in effect at the time of original equipment manufacture (see Annex B). The converted device shall also at least meet the construction and design requirements applicable to the original equipment described in the edition of the standard that was in effect at the time of original equipment manufacture.
b) Older designs of metal-enclosed or metal-clad switchgear assemblies also may not meet the design and construction requirements of the most recently published editions of the standards. For example, when conversions to circuit breakers are supplied, it may be impractical to convert the existing assemblies to meet the most recently published editions of the standards. In these cases, conversion of the existing assemblies is not required unless specifcally stated otherwise in this standard. A
